Students these days deal with more than ever before, and our ministry hopes to give them the tools to make it through that crazy time of adolescence. We all need Christian friends along the path. We all want a place to belong, a community. At Athens First, we have a community of faith where we find encouragement in the tough days and share the joy in the great ones.

Serve

Whenever we do something for others, we are extending the love of Jesus Christ.  Assisting elderly members of our church with a chore list that they can no longer perform themselves, gathering  food or coats for the local families in Athens in need or learning to paint and hammer in preparation for the summer UM Army building experience, the students of Athens First enjoy serving others in the name of Jesus Christ.‍

Special Events

Add in day trips, camps, mission activities, Youth-led worship service opportunities and whatever other reasons we can find to get together and you will find a community that always has room for more to join in!

Super 6 Confirmation Program

Our 6th graders participate in a confirmation program that guides them as they grow as disciples of Jesus Christ and understand what it means to “claim His name” for themselves before they join Athens First.

This group meets on Sunday evenings to study and has special events planned just for them to have fun and to learn about their faith.  During this time, they have there are special retreats, field trips to other churches and synagogues and mission activities such as collecting for the Henderson County Food Pantry, filling snack bags for Meals on Wheels during the Christmas holidays, purchasing gifts for a Christmas angel, filling Easter baskets for the Food Pantry.

UM Army

Athens TX | July 13th- July 19th 2025

U. M. ARMY – Texas Conference is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with offices in College Station, Texas and Tyler, Texas. U. M. ARMY (United Methodist Action Reach-Out Mission by Youth) began in 1979 with a youth mission trip to  Athens, Texas, where youth groups from several Houston churches gathered to provide home repair assistance to people in need. Today this organization has grown to more than 30 separate missions throughout East and Southeast Texas with over 3,500 youth and adult volunteers annually. Our mission is two-fold; serving people in need, and providing young people an opportunity to mature in their faith-walk and life skills through Christian service.

Our mission is accomplished every summer when thousands of youth and adult volunteers sacrifice a week of their vacation to join God’s ARMY. Using a local Methodist church as a base where they gather to have their meals, sleep in classrooms, and worship in the Sanctuary, participants spend each day of the week providing free home repairs for low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners in the surrounding area. Through the building of wheelchair ramps, porches, steps, and handrails; painting homes, cleaning houses, and mowing yards, this ARMY reaches out and becomes missionaries serving God’s people.

This work, along with daily devotions and evening worship, provides a unique opportunity for Christian growth and leadership development in youth. Combining this with evening recreation, fellowship, and fun makes U. M. ARMY an unforgettable and life-changing experience.
Homes are repaired. Hearts are lifted. Lives are changed. Love is shared. God is revealed.
